ADI CNC cutting tools and processing techniques on porcelain and ceramic slabs

-

ADI, produces cnc cutting and profiling tools with high cutting performance for porcelain and ceramic slabs classified as Ultra Compact Surfaces.

For porcelain and ceramic slabs which are classified as Ultra Compact Surfaces, according accepted general norms, the thickness is 12 mm (+/- 0.5) whereas planarity tolerance is + / - 2 mm on 1620 mm and 3420 mm.

Full Size slabs are packed with great care in a vertical position on specially designed metal “A Frame” trestles, which can be carried by a forklift.

The individual slab canal so be moved using rubbercoated canvas straps; the use of chains or steel cables is not advisable as they could damage the material.

In the design of a kitchen top, maintain a minimum distance of 50 mm from the outer edge with holes and grooves. The same minimum distance must be maintained between adjacent openings.

To create internal corners and openings, create a joint of at least 5 mm in the angle to distribute the stresses, as is generally done when working stone, marble and bonded materials.

Although not recommended, 90° internal angles may be obtained using a water-jet process. This finish increases the possibility of cracking during processing, handling, transport and installation of the top, and the subsequent settling of the various kitchen units.

For cutting, use good condition diamond discs suited for machining porcelain stoneware, on water operated machinery. Both segmented and continuous rim (maximum step 3 mm) discs can be used. The slab must be fed in the same direction as the disc rotation. Before machining, check that the work top is flat, level, in good condition and free of any processing waste. The slab big size has non-squared external edges. Start the machining by squaring off the two sides. The infeed and outfeed speed must always be 50% less than nominal working speed. A lower feed speed ensures finishing with reduced chamfer on the edge. The slabs can be cut with an angle for joint applications for baffles with height greater than the thickness of material.

In profiling and sink cutting operations, it should be ensured that the slab is fixed and positioned right without any move. For that purpose, if there is on the machine, vacuum holding systems can be used or slab can be fixed by clamping systems on work table. Number and position of vacuum cups are chosen according to project to be worked such that the slab is fixed at all times.
