2018 yılında Türkiye The total mineral Export revenue of Turkey in 2018 was 4,6 billion dollars. The value of mineral Export made via The Aegean Mineral Exporters’ Association was 916 million dollars. As we look at the overall natural stone Export figures of Turkey, we realize that there is % 6 loss in value, compared to a previous year. The total revenue acquired is 1.908.306.291,26 dollars.
The main reason why we have not been able to achieve the growth rate, we targeted for mineral exports in 2018, is the decline in the demand for natural stone in China. The amount of Turkey’s natural stone export to China, which was 3.951.629.077 kg in the January-December period of 2018, decreased by 15,82 % compared to the same period of the previous year. The total natural stone revenue in the same period was 773.837.525 dollars with % 18,16 decline.
As result of the stress on the Chinese construction sector and the decreasing demand by the Chinese customers, production level in the quarries was kept very low. Even some of the quarries were temporarily out of service. We are experiencing the risks of depending on a single country in the sector. For this reason, we are working in order to have access to new export markets in different countries. Currently, we are compensating the decline caused by the situation in Chinese market with our processed product exports. Although our natural stone exports to China was reduced by 18,16%, our total natural stone exports reduced by 6%. The difference is due to the increase in our processed natural stone products export.
On the other hand, we could not receive enough natural stone demand from India as we had expected after the removal of natural stone quotas in the country. Our Natural stone exports to India in 12 months period increased by 6 percent compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 90.236.658 $. This was another reason for not achieving the expected natural stone trade in 2018. In November, during our visit to Mr. Mithat Cansız, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, we had the chance to convey our ideas for solving the long-standing mine permit and license problems.
According to the information we have received from the Deputy Minister, the sector will hear good news about the license problems in 2019. As you know, it was almost impossible to open new mineral fields for a long time. With the permissions that allow activation of these fields, new mineral sites will be opened and production will increase rapidly. This growing production rate will make significant contributions to the current account deficit, in 2019.
In 2019
The vision which the former Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Mr. Berat Albayrak, put forward for the sector in the framework of the National Energy and Mines Policy, showed us a way and gave extra energy. In order to reach the targets of 2023 in the sector, we will concentrate on bringing our underground riches in to the economy and value-added production in the scope of National Energy and Mineral Policy. The National Energy Policy of our country aims at carrying Turkey to a better position in the field of energy via enabling nationalization and the security of supply.
As you know, Turkey is a foreign-dependent country in terms of energy. By creating a variety of countries and resources for energy, we need to prevent the volatility in energy costs from adversely affecting our country and our economy. For this reason, it is very important to use our domestic resources in the first phase. On the other hand, we need to diversify the countries from which we supply energy. Turkish mining sector is an underrated sector that is weak at lobbying. We are the temporary owners of the mines owned by the Turkish people. We will make production and export by taking the sensitivities of Turkish people. Turkish mining has not yet been able to find its full value. We will continue the URGE and R & D Center Projects to enable the sector to be prized.
