Ergün Efendioğlu: “Şirketi çocukların raporlarından takip ediyoruz” Hepiniz Trabzonspor’u mu tutuyorsunuz?
Ergün Efendioğlu: “We follow our company from children’s reports”
Birarada yapmayı en çok sevdiğiniz şey nedir? Benzer hobileriniz var mı?
Halis:
Birarada yemek yemekten, sinemaya gitmekten büyük keyif alıyoruz. Hatta sinema etkinliklerimiz de oluyor.
Ergün : Perşembe günleri ailecek akşam yemeği yiyoruz. Gelinler, torun çocuklar hep birarada. Pazar günleri de kahvaltıda biraraya geliyoruz. Bazen de Trabzonspor’un devre maçları oluyor, onu da beraber izleyip, beraber ağlaşmayı seviyoruz.
Bütün aile Trabzonsporlu. What are the things you love doing together? Do you have similar hobbies?
Halis:
We take great pleasure in eating together, going to the cinema. We even have cinema events.
Ergün: We have a family dinner on Thursdays. Brides and grandchildren are always together. On Sundays, we come together for breakfast. Sometimes we watch Trabzonspor’s soccer games together. Do you support the same team? The whole family is fan of Trabzonspor.
How do you feel when you see the success of your children after you handed over the management to them?
Ergün:
I am very happy on my behalf. My kids know it. I have withdrawn myself professionally for the last five years, in the name of institutionalization and handed over the business to my children. I can proudly say that they have been doing better than we did in our term, in spite of their new ages. Maybe because of the current environment which is more suitable for their generation or maybe because they are easily adapted to new technologies. But the fact is, children are managing better than we did, because they are able to access data easier. We have learned to manage reports of Emre and Halis from the balance sheet. In the operational sense, they are presenting us reports they prepared regarding the most profited products, unnecessary expenses and customer relations. We used to do these superficially. Now they are writing everything down in detail and support their reports prepared regarding production process including the price of electric during day production, with technical data. Because today’s profitability is hidden in the details. As they say, “Do something that no one does or do something that no one can do.” Now, very few companies in the sector have institutionalized and opened the way for the second generation. Very few managers do not only think about themselves. We, my brother and Erkan, showed our children that we have faith in them by handing over our business if they work in peace around our family constitution. Our deceased father did the same. Today, we are stay in the background and interfere with their situations when needed. We are also very happy with this. The architects of the current success of our company for the last five years are our children.
Have you ever had any business experience that made you think you are lucky to have your sons / fathers with you? Ergün:
Especially in some of our investments made in recent years, the children proved us our mistakes on some of our investments, which we failed. They explained us with data that some of the investments we had made was not productive for our business and incurred losses, so they saved the company from going to a worse point. I can say without exaggeration that they saved this company from bankruptcy thanks to that data. Then I said, “thanks god we have these good children.”
Halis: When we want to convince the board of directors of something, they become a mediator. When I talk about some of the investments that my father mentioned of at the board meetings they don’t take them serious enough. But, when I convince my father to talk about those investment ideas, they react positively. I am the one who do the calculation and prepare data, but that is my father who persuades the board. There are also times when I say, “Fortunately I have my uncle.”
Emre: I am always thankful for having my father and my uncles working with us. They raised us. We owe them for everything they did since our childhood. They made us study and grow up in a best way possible. We try to be better than them. Although they dropped out high school, they gave us university education and helped us to do all kinds of activities. They gave us moral and material support and they still do. Therefore, I always say, “It’s good that I have all of them.”
Fathers interfere with children very easily, and when children do the same, it’s usually a problem. Do you have the courage to argue with your father of a subject that your father has done which you disagree? Ergün: I really think we have that democratic environment. However, let the children answer this question.
Emre: I can easily say that we are very comfortable about this.
Halis: If a part is right, it persuades the others with proper data and reports. Than, we all agree with them. Natural stone industry is a difficult sector. Have you ever wish you were in another line of business?
Emre:
I feel it sometimes. Let me explain. Stonework is an enjoyable job, but opponents are so cruel. Here, my job security is high. I am in harmony with the environment. My salary is good. At the same time, I pay my tax to the state. But in some cities, I see my competitors who do the same business working with Syrian, Afghani, Pakistani employees. There is no harmony with the environment. They don’t even treat the sludge. They do not care about job security. There is not even an official salary. The salary paid is at around 1200–1300 TL. How can I compete with this people? My production costs are expensive but theirs are getting cheaper this way.
Halis: I am very happy to be active in the natural stone sector. Because this business involves both art and trade. It includes technology and communication with people. We should follow the new technologies so that we can improve our factory even better. We must follow the latest trends in art to find out what architects like and what the current trends are going. We are following the world and make trade with China and Italy. We have to follow the world because we make natural stone trade with nearly 60 countries. We take action by following the difficulties in the world sector. I love this business since it requires knowledge and interest with many other branches. One day, my father’s friend Rüştü Hoca came to see me. He said: “Shame on the entire marble sector. Marble is a blessing like wheat. It is very sad to Turkish marble producers sell these valuable blessing which is formed in millions of years at very cheap prices. I was very impressed by this statement and never forget it. He was completely right. If you ask me what I regret. On behalf of the whole sector, I regret of selling these valuable resources under their value.
There are two points that make me upset. One is selling natural stone under its value and the other is the presence of ignorant people in the sector who causes this situation. As long as the number of educated people in the sector increases, I believe the prices go up. The competition should not be price focused but quality, brand, artoriented instead.
