WINNER Transcendence, by Nada Debs, Lebanon

-

A prayer rug is a sacred object with a legacy spanning centuries, so reimagining this staple of the Islamic culture is not an easy task. With the Transcendence collection, the acclaimed designer Nada Debs does so with respect, grace and creativity, envisioning a range that is not only emblematic of the Muslim faith, but is also globally resonant. The collection’s defining moments – handwoven archways and domes are design elements that unite religions, as evident in ancient mosques, churches, temples and shrines.

Developed in collaboration Zuleya by FBMI, the collection supports unprivileged women weavers in Afghanistan. Its design – a layering of strong lines and more classical, floral patterns inspired by antique Persian carpets – speaks of a post-pandemic philosophy wherein objects will bring together different cultures and tell stories of their mindful creation. 2021 has been a stellar year for Debs, who also unveiled her creations for Irthi, Sharjah’s contemporary crafts council and designed bespoke pieces for the UAE’s permanent Mission to the UN in New York. nadadebs.com
