DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
WINNER Ammar Basheir, Bahrain
Ammar Basheir has crafted a singular identity for himself as one of the MENA region’s most influential designers, with a bold visual signature. Recent standout projects include Nuzul Al Salam, a restored traditional home turned modern boutique hotel that is credited with reviving one of Bahrain’s oldest districts, the interiors of The Green Corner, a visually dramatic new centre for culture in Bahrain’s historic Muharraq district and one-of-a-kind offices that feel like plush lounges and libraries rather than cold corporate environments.
Basheir studied in London, a city he credits with fostering an eclectic perspective on visual arts and crafts that informs all that he does. When Basheir created his seminal show at the historic La Fontaine Centre back in 2007, he focused on all things raw. Since then, he has viewed design as a means to build tactile connections for people. Alive, intimate and vibrant, his work marries traditional craft, storytelling and mega-watt glamour with myriad international influences ranging from art and architecture, to fashion and history. ammarbasheir.com
