Legacies & Legends
THIS IS TRADITIONALLY CALLED OUR ROYAL ISSUE, but as we put the magazine together, the idea of building or protecting a legacy came through time and again. So, we decided to take pause and pivot, changing the working title to the ‘Legacy Issue’ and it stuck, as things that have the weight of history behind them tend to do.
There is plenty of content in the issue related to royalty old and new (after all, perpetuating a dynasty and burnishing legacies is the very stuff that monarchies are forged upon). HH Sheikha Lateefa bint Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, founder of Tashkeel, looks back on 14 years of the region’s pre-eminent creative incubator and shares her hopes for the future of the UAE’s design scene. Tashkeel was the worthy winner of the first Outstanding Achievement prize at the 2021 AD Design Awards. Turn to the special section which begins on page 66 to discover the winners of the other 10 categories.
Elsewhere in the issue, we share the story of the breathtaking renovation of an 18th-century Sicilian palace (p.94). Abandoned for 30 years since the death of its last aristocratic owner, it’s now a shining jewel thanks to the Herculean efforts of French filmmaker Jean-Louis Remilleux. Jeweller to the stars Fawaz Gruosi is starting afresh with an eponymous brand and new Mayfair HQ after the demise of de Grisogono (p.64), and heritage Italian linen label Pratesi (beloved of Coco Chanel) is being relaunched with exquisite products that give a nod to its illustrious history. Read the inside story on page 44.
Our cover star, Fahad Hariri, has bold plans to further the legacy of the legendary interior designer Alberto Pinto, after acquiring the studio in summer 2020. When we spoke, Hariri was poised, professional and passionate, sharing his vision for taking the Pinto brand global. I look forward to following the journey. Enjoy the issue!
