Through the Looking Glass

-

Burj Al Arab Jumeirah is one of the world’s most iconic architectural landmarks, and now, it is hosting an exhibition of works by Anish Kapoor beneath its audacious atrium. It’s the first happening in a pop-up space curated by international contemporary art gallery, Galleria Continua, which will be open for six months. On show in the first-floor lobby are seven little-seen pieces by the revered British Indian artist, including brilliantly coloured discs, magistral alabaster

works and mesmerising mirrored pieces from Kapoor’s 2017 Alice collection. Each conveys a feeling of suspended time, immersing the viewer in a sensorial experience. Kapoor describes himself as ‘a painter who is a sculptor’, and his work sits at the intersection of the two disciplines, employing optical illusions to hint at a space beyond the physical realm.
