Etihad Airways and Gulf Air announce bold new codeshare

Building upon a memorandum of understanding (MoU) agreement that was penned at last year’s Bahrain International Airshow, Etihad Airways and Gulf Air has entered into a codeshare partnership.

Set to kick off with this year’s summer schedule, each airline is expected to adopt each other’s identification code on select flights heading to Asia and North America.

As per the agreement, Etihad Airways will place its ‘EY’ code on Gulf Air flights from Bahrain to and from Abu Dhabi, Baghdad, Casablanca, Dhaka, Faisalabad, Larnaca, Malaga, Multan, Najaf, Peshawar, Sialkot and Tbilisi.

Similarly, Gulf Air will place its ‘GF’ code on Etihad flights from Abu Dhabi to and from Bahrain, Brisbane, Chicago O’Hare, Jakarta, Lagos, Los Angeles, Melbourne, New York JFK, Sydney and Washington.

Both Etihad Guest and Gulf Air Faclconflyer loyalty customers will be able to take advantage of codeshare opportunities that will be introduced in the near-future.

“We are thrilled to be signing this codeshare agreement today with our long-time partner, Gulf Air. The relationship between Abu Dhabi and Manama stretches back nearly 70 years, with established and deep-rooted ties between both countries and carriers,” said Tony Douglas, group CEO of Etihad Aviation Group.

“This partnership reinforces Etihad Airways’ commitment to working closely with Gulf Air following the signing of our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last year. The signing today is a

great example of how two flag carriers can enhance the experience of our guests by providing a greater choice of destinations and world-leading inflight service and Arabian hospitality,” he added.

During the announcement, it was also noted that guests travelling to the USA with Eithad will be able to take advantage of the preclearance facility available at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

The purpose-built facility in Terminal 3 that is overseen by the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), allows US-bound passengers to be complete all immigration, customs and agriculture inspections at Abu Dhabi International. Upon arrival, travellers are processed as domestic passengers, which in turn helps to rapidly conclude the arrival process.

Sharing his viewpoint, commented: “This is a remarkable event for both Gulf Air and Etihad Airways and we take pride in elevating this relationship further with the signing of this codeshare agreement,” said Krešimir Kucko, CEO of Gulf Air.

“Last year, during the Bahrain International Airshow, we signed a cooperation MOU and today we extend this to the next level with this codeshare. Customers of both airlines will now have more options to fly to more destinations and explore new cities across our networks.

“The relationship between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates has always been a strong one and we feel proud to be part of history by working closely with our friends at Etihad Airways,” he added.

The codeshare agreement builds upon a previously inked MoU between the two airlines.
