Business Traveller (Middle East) - - Upfront -

THE SECOND W Hotel in Dubai, which will house 350 sea-facing guest rooms and suites on Palm Jumeriah’s Western Crescent, is gearing up for its September launch.

Select media had a sneak peek to coincide with a dinner from Chef Akira Back which was served in a WOW Suite.

First impressions From the moment you walk in and see the hanging red crystal box lights and multi-coloured mosaics in the lobby, this W resort ( billed as the first ‘ W Escape’ in the Middle East) packs a colourful, contemporary punch. Even the Away Spa features bright purples and graffiti artwork.

Designs make reference to local culture with the bright falaj-style cavernous entrance and the lobby is a modern take on an Arabic citadel with different window shapes, which guests can peer through as they walk to and from the lifts. A Bedouin-esque fireplace is also in the lobby and the spa features an elaborate water drop in a nod to Pearl fishing heritage.

F&B Chef Akira Back served a six-course menu in an 846sqm Wow Suite on the fourth floor, whose terrace overlooks the distinctive, individual pod-dotted pool and WET Deck – although on opening his restaurant will be on the other side of the resort. There will be six F&B venues including Torno Subito by Massimo Bottura, his first venue outside Italy, and the SoBe rooftop bar should be popular for Sundowners.

Rooms This swish suite apart, we weren’t shown the rooms, but alongside 224 King Rooms and 68 Twin Rooms are 22 suites (100-108sqm). An Extreme Wow Suite covering 1,728sqm spans the sixth and seventh floors and contains its own 25-metre pool.
