Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel, Tbilisi

- Dominic Ellis

BACKGROUND

This landmark hotel was built in 1967 by the Soviet government and named Hotel Iveria after the ancient kingdom of Iveria. After extensive renovations, it reopened in 2009 as a Radisson.

WHERE IS IT?

Next to the avant garde Biltmore (Millennium & Copthorne luxury brand, the building is owned by HH Sheikh Nahyan), and together they tower over the Mtkvari river on the main Rustaveli Avenue. Radisson plans to convert the building between the two into a hotel and a 200-room Park Inn is proposed a short drive away (Radisson Blu Tsinandali in the wine-making Kakheti province is opening shortly, see Upfront).

W H AT ’ S IT LIKE?

Shooting up in the airey lift to my 14th floor room, there is abundant natural light, which extends to the colourful art-dotted MICE facilities on the ground floor. Boutiques are also available on the ground floor.

ROOMS

My end-of-corridor Business Class corner room had fabulous wraparound views of the river, city and mountains. A lime green sofa-comecouch lined one window and the large TV was elevated from a column. The bath, sink and powerful shower were set behind – and even this area had been designed to let in light and views. The toilet was separate by the door and desk with tea/ coffee and espresso tucked away at the back. I slept soundly.

FOOD AND DRINK

Breakfast at the Iveria Terrace (pictured, inside the Italian Filini restaurant) overlooking the water is an enjoyable way to start your day. Umami serves Asian fusion and Iveria Café is located close to the hotel.

MEETINGS

A major attribute with ballroom (divides in three, can host 350 guests) and nine spaces altogether on the ground floor – although it extends to across the road with the three-floor Republic Event Hall, topped by the Andropov’s Ears French seafood restaurant (pictured).

LEISURE

The tree-lined pool area looked Mediterranean chic and a gym is available.

VERDICT

Central location and perfect base for business travellers and venue for MICE events.
