The Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel, Autograph Collection

BACKGROUND

This boutique property opened in May as part of Marriott’s Autograph collection.

WHERE IS IT?

Fantastically located on a quiet side street in the historic heart of Rome, just a few cobbled steps from the iconic Pantheon, from which the property takes its name, and within walking distance of other major historic spots including the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps.

W H AT ’ S IT LIKE?

Esteemed Milanese designer Marco Pica has taken inspiration from the Eternal City, and particularly the neighbouring Pantheon, in his vision for this luxury boutique hotel. Subtle circular motifs (in testament to the Pantheon’s oculus) and plenty of marble and brass have been incorporated throughout the hotel to beautiful effect. One standout feature is the Gallery to the right of the lobby (which will eventually offer a showcase of design pieces in the glass cabinets), where arches of light create a stunning illuminated effect.

Staff at this newly opened property are clearly proud of their hotel and this translates into exceptional levels of naturally warm and helpful service.

ROOMS

The boutique property offers 79 rooms, including 20 suites. I stayed in a one-bedroom Junior Suite, with two queensize beds. This was a lovely spacious room at 38 sqm, though for a “suite” I would usually expect it to be bigger, and assume this indicates the 23 sqm entry-level rooms would feel quite cosy.

The décor continues to be impressive in the rooms, with highend furniture and luxurious upholstery. The bathroom was decked out in striking deep-red marble and glass, with high-end Aqua di Parma amenities and a striking mirror with mosaic-like effect. The views can be a bit hit and miss throughout the property – my particular view was mainly of the side of a building, however the Pantheon Suite, for example, offers views over the Pantheon, while the Dioniso Terrace Suite enjoys a private balcony to gaze over the surrounding historical rooftops.

Standard business facilities such as a dedicated work desk and connectivity suite were lacking – and there’s no club lounge either, so this is not necessarily the best choice if you are planning to get lots of computer work done. However, there is a side table and chair for light browsing and emails.

Lighting switches were slightly confusing with pre-set “scenes”, rather than individual controls; however, there was a convenient panel located beside each bed, and this included a master switch that actually turned everything off with one press.

Another slight oddity was the USB by the bedside (above the side table), which is only for Samsung phones, apparently (and didn’t work for my iPhone). However, hidden underneath the side table is another USB that is compatible with Apple chargers, alongside a universal socket.

The minibar offerings included gourmet snacks such as vegan crisps and Danish pastries, alongside complimentary tea and DeLonghi instant coffee.

FOOD & DRINK

Easily my favourite thing about this property was the breathtaking rooftop Divinity Terrace Lounge Bar – what a view. The sleek, sixth-floor terrace puts you at eye level with the ancient rooftops, church spires and basilica domes of the surrounding area – a beautiful and unusual place to relax with a drink or conduct a casual meeting. A glass of Prosecco as the sun set was simply spectacular. The outdoor terrace and indoor bar area can also be rented out for events.

Further round the terrace is the breakfast area – again with an indoor and outdoor area to soak up the stunning views. The breakfast offering was sufficient, with breads, cold cuts, fruits and more – plus hot dishes available to order from the kitchen, though this wasn’t immediately obvious and we did have to enquire, rather than being made aware of this option.

During my visit in June, the Dionysus restaurant and bar on the ground floor was still not open (it’s reportedly now in operation), offering up the gourmet talents of Michelin-starred chef Pasquale Palamaro.

LEISURE

A boutique shop of upmarket Italian designer goods is also due to open soon on the ground floor.

A gorgeous boutique property in the heart of Rome, ideal for those with meetings in the city but hoping to maximise their spare time.
