The Feng Shui Of Pillars

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a beautiful home in a very upmarket area of Dubai. It was built like a palace and the interiors were straight out of a movie. An Italian architect had designed the home inspired by opulent places of Italy and Europe.

From the moment you entered the premises, it was as if you were in Italian countryside. Every tiny detail had been taken care of. From the selection of marble to crystal chandeliers, everything was perfect. I felt like I was walking through a museum somewhere in Europe. In spite of all the opulence and grandeur it had one major problem – there were pillars everywhere in the house. There was a huge pillar right at the entrance and few were present in the living room. The master bedroom also a had a huge pillar in the middle of the room and so did the TV room. At first, I tried to ignore them but they were in my face everywhere. And they looked odd.

And so, it got me thinking; is it advisable to have pillars? What if the property you choose to live or work in already has pillars? What can be done to combat the effect of pillars?

Pillars if positioned at entrance or in the middle of any rooms can hamper the energy flow in that area. It can even act as a hindrance. Ideally if you are building a home, it is advisable to take care of the pillars at that stage and keep them hidden. However, you may purchase a home or an office that is already constructed and has pillars. So here are some tips on dealing with pillars.

If you have large odd shaped pillars with sharp edges, it is best to use plaster of paris and round them off. Rounded pillars are harmonious and better to have than square pillars. Rounded pillars also don’t obstruct the flow of energy within a property.

Avoid painting pillars in bright colours. Painting them in white or light colours make them less obstructive visually. Do not cover the pillars in fancy wallpapers. I have seen homes where the pillars have been covered in dark wallpapers giving them a look of tree trunks. Ideally, if possible cover the pillar in mirrors as then they become invisible. If you can’t cover the entire pillar with mirrors, then try and do it partially.
