In the mood for cake?

- DAVID LIGHT david@khaleejtimes.com

WHO ISN’T ALWAYS hankering for a baked good or two, right? Whether it’s someone’s birthday, a special festival or simply a Wednesday morning, we’re always scouring the landscape for a sliver of gateau or fresh bread to satiate the endless cravings. So, today we thought we’d share our hankering with you and let you in on where we like to frequent to find our fix.

Chocolate sensation

A relative newcomer, Homestead Restaurant and Bakery at The Yard, Al Khawaneej, has made a name for itself in a pretty short space of time, not least because of this chocolate cake. Just look at it. At Dhs25 a slice, head down and savour a magic moment.

Far East eats

Atisuto Japanese bakery at Ibn Battuta Mall combines authentic Japanese ingredients and culinary techniques with modern influences from Western kitchens and features sweet and savoury pastries as well as salads and traditional Japanese meals, as it’s a restaurant too. Pastry items, created using Japanese flour sourced from Japan, include croissant creams, choco chip scones and honey cubes. Oh, and don’t forget the desserts including Atisuto milk cake, French Toast and Japanese cheese cake.

Brit of all right

This summer, Marks & Spencer’s sweet treats have been inspired by some of Britain’s most loved flavours and include strawberries and cream, rhubarb and custard and lemon and ginger. For a super sweet treat, pick up a packet of rhubarb and custard choux-nuts. Or, if candy is more your thing, the Cornish Clotted Cream Truffles promise to be popular with luxurious white chocolate filled with a Cornish clotted cream ganache.

By royal decree

Magnolia Bakery at The Dubai Mall recently made these elderflower sponge cakes combined with a smooth lemon cream and light elderflower meringue buttercream to match Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding cake. They were superb, as are any of their cupcakes. Try and limit yourself to a couple at most!

Pie high

It’s always pie season at Clinton St. Baking Company in Downtown Dubai and the American all-day dining restaurant and bakery offers homemade pies for all occasions. Made in-house using organic ingredients, choose from their traditional pies - pumpkin, apple, cherry, peach or key lime - to take to your next office gathering. You’ll be very popular.

German style

This isn’t your run-of-the-mill (intended) bakery. Brothaus Bakery-Bistro at the Steinberger is a restaurant and tavern too and they have a brunch coming up. Launching on August 3, their chilled out Berlin vibe is met with an array of delicious traditional breakfast and lunch options making it the perfect Friday social spot to graze with friends and family. Begin with freshly baked bread from 10.30am then enjoy the rest of the menu and add on four beverages for Dhs100.
