WEDNESDAY 13

Open-air film

-

Celebrate the arrival of the cooler months by heading outdoors to catch a movie at Sea-nema, at Azure Beach – Rixos Premium, Dubai JBR. Showing a range of classics every Wednesday at 9.30pm, take a seat on comfortable beanbags or cosy sofas under the stars and enjoy the show.

During a recent evening out, I was privy to a conversation between two journalists on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to news coverage. While one was an out and out news junkie, feeding off the political crisis in various parts of the world, the other preferred to immerse herself in what passes off as fluff, or so called ‘nonsensical’ entertainment news.

Since I’m more inclined towards the latter, a recent article in The Guardian filled me with glee cause it cemented my personal views on why one should not let political news take over one’s life. It’s good to air your own ideologies, of course, even if it’s borrowed from someone else’s expert opinions, cause how else do you hold forth on political debates and social commentaries? However much we may take credit for forming our own ‘personal’ opinions, even that is coloured by ideas we have read or heard from so called experts. If we have to heal the rift caused by politics, it stands to reason that we give an ear to perspectives that are contrary to our own. But in this age of information overload, where we have access to all kinds of persuasive literature, who is to say whether what we read and believe to be that gospel is actually the truth? That’s why I always believe its good to have contrary views, to change our minds as often as possible, as long as we keep ourselves open to all kinds of views and don’t hold forth that only our ‘truth’ matters.

In part that’s why I enjoy the entertainment beat so much. The vagaries of showbiz ensures no two days are alike, and we are kept on our toes wondering who’s dating whom and which diva will snag the role opposite the moody superstar... If you like us, enjoy some buzzing news, turn the pages to know what’s happening in the showbiz world and closer home what went on at the Dabangg show in Dubai on Friday.
