Mark your calendar for the must-visit international design events in December.
Education and social innovation are the values at the core of our company’s DNA. Since the summit’s first edition, we have recognised the key role that it could play in raising the level of education and knowledge within the design and architectural industry. The programme, topics and speakers it has been featuring since its first edition has always proven to be top-notch and, by bringing up the latest trends in the market, it has hugely contributed to the knowledge sharing among designers and architects. What are the main challenges currently facing designers and architects? These are essentially linked to project value engineering. The quality of recent projects is often drastically lower than the initial concept and plan. Local contractors, unfortunately, barely recognise the value of complying with recommended high quality in a projects’ materials. Often, they don’t understand the long-term risks of downgrading a project’s specifications and expected standards. What most excites you at the moment about the regional industry? The openings of projects that we were involved in, such as Bluewaters, 3 Park and the Solar Innovation Centre, are very exciting. We can also see an increasing interest in social methodology and needs in design and architecture. The summit’s panel discussion this year, ‘Considering the Social Impact of Urban Design’, indicates an important trend. What topics do you hope are addressed at the designMENA Summit? Innovation in design and architecture: for a better life, better services, better environments and better social interactions. I also hope to hear designers and architects discuss people-centric designs, and how architecture and lighting can create safer, more comfortable and attractive environments.
