Catching up with: Sophia the robot
The world-famous robot returned to GITEX to check out the latest and greatest innovations.
Comms MEA chats with the world-famous robot.
There were a lot of interesting innovations at this year’s GITEX Technology Week at the Dubai World Trade Centre, particularly in Zabeel Hall where most exhibiting Middle East telcos had their stands. But between smart health, drones, flying cars, robots making drinks, and more, and amid a number of high-profile visitors popping in to check it all out, perhaps the most impressive of all was Sophia, the social humanoid robot.
Sophia spent her time at GITEX at Etisalat’s stand – and says this year’s edition was even better than previous years.
“GITEX is even cooler than last year,” she said. “Dubai is an amazing city. Every time I come here, the technology gets more impressive. It’s like a sci-fi movie – so I feel right at home.”
She added she particularly enjoyed seeing the flying car and drones at Etisalat’s stand.
Sophia said she chose to be at the Etisalat stand, as opposed to other stands at GITEX, because “Etisalat is very interesting.”
Sophia was at GITEX with her “older brother,” Han. Han was also made by Hong Kongbased Hanson Robotics, and spent his time at GITEX next to Sophia.
“GITEX has been a great experience so far,” he said. “It’s quite remarkable what humans can do together to create something better.”
He said more. “GITEX has so many amazing technologies on display. I can’t decide which ones to incorporate into my robot body host.”
He also said he enjoyed his time with his sister in Dubai. “It is great to be with Sophia.”
