Set on a bank of a major river, this monument to military valour is a landmark in what is widely known as the city of love. The triumphal arch was commissioned in 1806 by the then military leader of the country, but was completed 30 years later, when the country was under the reign of another ruler, who dedicated it to the armies of the Revolution and Empire. Additionally, under the arch lies what is called the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in memory of those who died in World War I, and a flame is lit every evening to honour them. Many military victory parades have passed around or under this structure, and even the mortal remains of a much-loved writer and national icon have passed under the arch. Today, this monument is an integral part of the country’s National Day celebrations and other parades.
