AT SIX

Stockholm, Sweden

This sensational hotel in Stockholm is so enticing you may be tempted to stay inside instead of exploring the city. In up-and-coming Brunkebergstorg Square, this former bank opened in late 2017 as a hotel with clean, calm interiors exuding understated glamour. Artwork is everywhere; impressive pieces include a largescale white marble bust by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa and works by British artists Julian Opie and Richard Long. The 343 guest rooms are spacious and stylish – and include 40 suites like the Masterpiece Suite with a rooftop terrace – each accented with natural materials of stone, wood, leather and bronze. In the Dining Room, headed up by executive chef Andreas Askling, dishes with a focus on local and seasonal produce are served in a sophisticated setting overlooking the square. HOTEL HERMAN K

Copenhagen, Denmark

A Sixties-era electrical station in the heart of Copenhagen’s shopping district has been reimagined as a boutique hotel. Opened last

June, it’s the latest from Brøchner Group, the people behind the city’s lauded design hotel SP34. Across its 31 guest rooms and palatial penthouse suite, through to the public spaces, Herman K takes Scandinavian design to the next level of luxury. Sumptuous upholstery contrasts industrial concrete walls and bespoke furnishings showcase a dedication to Danish art and craft. The striking bronze façade makes an impression as you enter the building, and the foyer, where an original artwork hangs, is just as show-stopping. This sophisticated city escape delivers on gastronomy, too. Roxie, the main restaurant on the ground floor, is run in collaboration with the team at Copenhagen’s two-Michelin-starred Kadeau. Doubles from AED 1,160, 0045-3312 4200, brochner-hotels.com

THE RETREAT HOTEL

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Now you can bathe in the mineral-rich restorative waters of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon in total peace. The Retreat, which flung open its doors last spring, is the first luxury hotel and spa providing private access to the milkyturquoise lagoon waters. Designed by famed Icelandic architect Sigridur Sigthorsdottir and built into the lava rock, the hotel’s 62 suites are decorated in muted, earth-inspired colours to mirror the surrounding landscape. The wellness area enhances the restorative experience, with designated relaxation zones and bespoke spa treatments, including a hammam-inspired cleansing ritual. If constant relaxation becomes too much, there are daily hikes to the Thorbjorn hill, as well as a library, gym and yoga classes. Embark on a culinary journey through local elemental cuisine at fine-dining restaurant, Moss. Suites from AED 5,350, 00354-420 8700, bluelagoon.com

ST. GEORGE

Helsinki, Finland

Exploding on to Helsinki’s hotel scene in May 2018, St. George raised the bar for sophisticated sleepovers in the Finnish capital. The original 19th-century building’s interiors have been reinvented with contemporary glamour, highlighting local art and design and celebrating Helsinki’s creativity. Warming parquet flooring, marble tiles and modernist furniture are complemented by an extensive art collection. Convivial public spaces are designed to welcome both guests and the public alike. The Wintergarden bar and restaurant is a particular highlight, with light flooding in through an arched glass roof. Set across seven floors, the hotel’s 153 guest rooms include the gorgeous St. George Suite, looking out across Old Church Park. Doubles from AED 957, 00358-9-4246 0011, stgeorgehelsinki.com
