SPY DRAMA QUEEN SONO WILL BE FIRST AFRICAN ORIG­I­NAL SE­RIES

Net­flix has or­dered Queen Sono, a drama about a fe­male se­cret agent, as its first African orig­i­nal se­ries. The news was con­firmed by South African tal­ent and Quan­tico star Pearl Thusi, who tweeted about the se­ries for the first time to­day.

The ac­tor said on Twit­ter: “#QueenSono – Africa’s first Net­flix orig­i­nal! A thrilling story about a kick­ass fe­male spy. Can’t wait for you guys to see what we have in store for you!” The se­ries, which launches glob­ally in 2019, was cre­ated by Kag­iso Lediga and will be ex­ec­u­tive pro­duced by Tamsin An­der­s­son.

The news about Queen Sono an­nounce­ment ar­rives days af­ter Net­flix’s VP of in­ter­na­tional orig­i­nals Erik Bar­mack an­nounced dur­ing Con­tent Lon­don that the com­pany will be com­mis­sion­ing orig­i­nal se­ries in Africa in 2019.

At the UBS Me­dia Con­fer­ence last week, Net­flix con­tent chief Ted Saran­dos had stated that in­ter­na­tional orig­i­nals will be a fo­cus area for Net­flix in 2019, with the com­pany set to ramp up spend­ing on lo­cal con­tent in sev­eral coun­tries in Asia, Africa and the Mid­dle East. The com­pany pre­dicted that “half of the top 10 most-watched shows in a given year are go­ing to come from out­side of the US.”
