New York’s Richard Mirando, AKA Seen, has been a street artist since the 1970s. This month he brings his colourful art to Dubai for an exhibition at the Opera Gallery, at DIFC, Dubai, in what’s another sign of growing interest in the scene in the UAE. Seen’s world of street art is steeped in urban culture – he’s most famously known for his 1980 piece The Hands Of Doom, when he painted a whole New York subway train car in four hours. His work on display in Dubai, though, explores his pop- art in uences, with superheroes such as the Hulk and Spider- Man leaping out of graf titagged canvases. And it turns out that the Mirando of the 1980s did just spend his time tagging trains. He grew up reading the comics of the heroes he paints now. “They weren’t father gures growing up, he says, “but they were my friends, for sure.
