SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES

The private island’s own private island

Esquire Middle East - - THE ESCAPE -

IN GANGSTER-SPEAK ‘sleeping with the fishes’ is a sinister term that would suggest a person has probably met their end in the most unenviable of fashions. In the Maldives however, the term is taken a lot more literally, especially in the case of the Conrad Maldives Rangali.

The ultra-lux resort has just opened an even more ultra-lux option to its hotel: The Muraka. Dubbed as the world’s first underwater hotel villa, this jaw-droppingly impressive property is the stuff that travel bucket lists were created for.

Located more than

16-feet below sea level in the middle of the Indian

Ocean with glass walls,

The Muraka is a twolevel aquarium where you can fall asleep to fish swimming overhead and wake up to the swaying arms of coral. The property — whose name means ‘coral’ the local Dhivehi language — is connected to the resort via a (seriously) long, private jetty and will set its guests back a cool AED180,000 per night.

Mind you, there is pretty much nowhere else, you’ll find an undersea master bedroom offering 180-degree views of sea life, where you can shower while watching the fish swim by. conradmaldives.com
