Faulkner is CEO and founder of Epic, a $2.9 bil­lion (rev­enue) med­i­cal soft­ware com­pany that is used to store the records of 250 mil­lion pa­tients. A com­puter pro­gram­mer, Faulkner founded Epic in 1979 in the base­ment of an apart­ment build­ing in Madi­son. She’s run the com­pany ever since and never taken out­side fund­ing. In 2015, Faulkner signed the Giv­ing Pledge and said she will even­tu­ally do­nate most of her stake to a char­i­ta­ble foun­da­tion.
