FOOD TALK: FISH HIGH IN OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

-

Consumption of food high in Omega-3 fatty acids will help people control their blood sugar levels. Amera Marian Varghese, Clinical Dietitian at Mediclinic Welcare Hospital recommends eating fish high in Omega-3 fatty acids, as a best food option for diabetic patients.

She says salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel, trout, albacore tuna are all types of fish rich in Omega- 3 fatty acids. Citing researchers from Oregon State University, she adds, ‘Omega-3 fatty acids, especially those derived from fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, or sardines have a wider health benefit than previously suspected. Of importance to people with diabetes is the finding that DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) may reduce the formation of harmful glucose metabolites linked to diabetic complications.’

If you are diabetes patient, you have an increased risk of heart disease, and Omega-3 fats help in lowering the risk of heart disease. Other studies also suggest that people who eat fatty fish or consume Omega-3 fatty acids regularly may be less likely to get depressed, she adds.

‘Choose fish that is broiled, baked or grilled to avoid the carbohydrate and extra calories that would be in fish that is breaded and fried.’ There is no single food has been proven to be more effective than any other is, so Dr Amera emphasises that a healthy, balanced diet is vital for all diabetic patients.
