CAN I HAVE APPLE CIDER VINEGAR?

-

I’ve been told that apple cider vinegar helps in improving metabolism and in weight loss. If yes, how much and how often should I have it? What should I keep in mind while I take ACV?

Vinegar is a good ingredient for daily consumption, as per ayurveda. It is hot and sharp in potency and it can imbalance both kapha and pitta and balance vata. It can improve appetite and has mild laxative properties.

However, ayurveda also warns that overuse of vinegar can result in eye problems, skin disease, among other. Fermented foods are pitta aggravating and, in excess, may cause overheating and, or inflammation. Avoid vinegar in conditions like atopic eczema, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, autoimmune conditions and in summer. People who have stomach ulcers or acid reflux may find that apple cider vinegar worsens their condition.

If you are trying to lose weight, adding apple cider vinegar to your diet probably won’t do the trick. There is no scientific evidence that shows vinegar consumption as a reliable, long-term measure for losing excess weight. One small study found that vinegar improved blood sugar and insulin levels in a group of people with Type 2 diabetes; but it won’t take the place of any medication for diabetes.

The acid in apple cider vinegar may erode your teeth enamel.

Acidic liquids like vinegar may exacerbate acid reflux.

If you have chronic kidney disease, avoid drinking apple cider vinegar.

One of the easiest and healthiest ways to consume apple cider vinegar is to add it to a healthy oil, such as olive oil, or mixed with water or used as a salad dressing.
