3 TIPS FOR ASPIRING WRITERS

-

1

Don’t only write about what you know about. Write about what you’d like to know about. A lot of aspiring writers see what is trending, and follow it. When Jurassic Park was popular I swear every book and movie was about dinosaurs. It could be a romcom and you would have a T Rex running wild through it. They thought it was popular but those wirters did not care about dinos; they only wanted to sell their book. So it was bad. I remember a book called

Sea Biscuit about a famous race horse written by Laura Hillenbrand. I read the book and loved the passion on the pages. It was incredible. And then I read that Laura had a condition which prevented her from leaving her house. So she never could ride a horse. But she had this passion and she lived and breathed this idea, this horse. So that passion came through in the pages of her book. Why? Because she was really interested in what she was writing about.

Writing is a long haul. So better fill up your tank to drive that car and the way to do that is to actually care about what you are writing about. Don’t expect to complete this over the weekend. You cannot write 1,000 pages in three days.

This is a commitment understand that. Like any other commitment it is going to take time and discipline. So be prepared for it. Take small steps- say, ‘I shall finish one chapter this week’ instead of saying ‘I will finish the book this weekend.’ That’s manageable. Sometimes people get overwhelmed by their own goals. So be realistic and set achiveable goals.

while you are writing don’t give up reading. I became a writer beause I love to read. I remember reading a lot of thrilers during my early days because I loved them. It also helps you hone your craft. You can pick up lessons on how to craft charatcers, drive the plt, write dialogue.
