Go ahead and get cozy with the ball
What’s the most common bunker advice you’ve heard? I bet it’s to hit two or three inches behind the ball. That works if you want to chunk the ball out and watch it roll across the green. But to get tour-quality spin, where the ball lands and checks by the hole, you need to get closer. Draw a line two inches behind the ball in practice, but land the back of the club on that line, not the leading edge. The face should strike the sand much closer to the ball ( above). You’ll control distance much easier this way, because your shots will be crisp without all that sand deadening them. As long as you set up well ( right), you won’t have to worry about blading it.
