THE LEATHER SKIRT GETS COMFY (YES, REALLY!)

WITH ITS ROCK’N’ROLL associations, the leather skirt isn’t renowned for its relaxed wearability. Until now, that is, because it’s been given a reboot for AW18, with a midi length and a right-for-now earthy palette.

A leather midi is your ideal choice for autumn: leather is warm enough to negate the need for annoying tights, it works well with a heel or a boot, and nails day-to-night dressing. It’s surprisingly wearable, too. Just ask the pregnant Meghan Markle, who wore an emerald green version during a visit to Sussex earlier this month.

“Leather skirts are a wardrobe essential,” says Tibi’s Amy Smilovic of her midis that include buttery leathers in silver and electric blue, complete with asymmetric details. “We designed this season’s skirt to have the ease of a track pant – ours are cut to fall naturally on the body, with a soft drape.” And like all good track pants, the full-skirted style has handy deep pockets.

Styling, as ever, is key. “Leather midis are a great transitional piece,” says Elizabeth Von Der Goltz, Global Buying Director at Net-a-Porter. “Simply add a roll neck or a shirt and boots. With trousers, you need to think about the style, fit, length – midiskirts are a no-brainer.”

From high street to luxury, there’s an array on the market. If you opt for classic black, choose one with directional detailing: think drawstring waists, buttondown fronts and exposed zips.

And how to wear a coloured leather? “You can be brave with the colour as long as the rest of your outfit is pared back – perhaps team with a beautiful camel knit,” advises Elizabeth. How very chic… and not a fishnet in sight.
