Sleeper Co-Founders

Grazia Middle East - - HOW TO BE IN FASHION -

Sleeper lays claim to the popularity of wearing PJs out of the house. The Ukrainian nightwear label specialises in beautiful, yet easy-to-wear nighties and pyjamas that are so chic you want to show them off. Created by two former fashion editors, these women knew exactly what they (and we) wanted: the need for comfort without forsaking style.

What’s the best thing about working together?

Katya: First of all, Asya is my friend. We are very close. We’re always there for each other and hear each other out. But the most important thing is that we laugh a lot.

How did you begin working together?

Katya: We were friends and both came from the fashion industry. We used to work as fashion editors for leading magazines in Russia and Ukraine. Our experiences pushed us to create something new, something that belonged to us.

Asya: The idea to create homeware occurred when Katya had a Christmas nap after watching the movie Curly Sue. She shared her dream with me, and six months later we launched our first collection. Two months later, then Editor-inChief of Vogue Italy, the late Franca Sozzani, named Sleeper the brand of the month.

Asya: When we began working on Sleeper, the [2014 Ukrainian] revolution was taking place on the streets of Kiev. We all participated in marches and we had all lived through a true nightmare.

Katya: All our fears vanished completely. We stopped being afraid and were ready to start a new chapter in our lives. Then we came up with the idea of creating a company with its own voice that would bring joy in simple situations.

What kind of woman wears your label?

Asya: The Sleeper girl is definitely a personality whose home life is filled with the same sense of joy as her social life. We believe that every individual represents a whole world, a universe.

How do you see your pieces being worn?

Asya: We came up with the idea of pyjamas that you can wear outside. For example, you can wear our pyjama top to the office instead of a regular shirt; a silk robe can function as a summer coat, and our white silk pyjamas can serve as a wedding outfit.

Katya: It’s easy to incorporate the clothes from Sleeper into your own wardrobe. Various combinations are possible, such as a top with jeans, pants with biker jacket, pyjamas with a trench coat, pants with kitten heels, a slip dress with a denim jacket or a cardigan.

Why do you think it’s better working as a duo rather than solo?

Katya: I wouldn’t have been able to create Sleeper without Asya. Almost everything in nature has a pair: eyes, hands, feet, ears, lungs, and it seems to me that this happens for a reason – if one part stops working, the body continues to live, and the same applies to partnerships.
