Nothing warms our heart more than seeing best friends become success stories. We speak to three female power duos and BFFs behind 2018’s hottest brands
ORLAGH MCCLOSKEY AND HENRIETTA RIX Rixo London Co-Founders and Creative Directors
Playful prints, a celebrity following and accessible price points to boot – what’s not to love about this London-born brand by two best friends, Orlagh McCloskey and Henrietta Rix? With a shared passion for vintage clothing and a need for beautiful silk dresses that didn’t cost the earth, the women created a lusted-after brand What’s the best thing about working together? Both: Working with my best friend!
How did you begin working together? Orlagh: We met at university, at London College of Fashion. We bonded over our shared love of all things vintage and became best friends instantly after working together on a project – fast forward a few years and Rixo was born.
Henrietta: I think the first thing I asked Orlagh, was “Where’s your bag from?” I’d been eyeing it up since our first class together – it was vintage, of course. We got talking after that and I couldn’t believe I’d found someone who loved vintage as much as me. We’d scour charity shops and vintage fairs together all over London, around the UK and even abroad when we went on holiday together, hunting for timeless treasures. We still make time to do this now, and it’s where we got the inspiration to start Rixo. After a couple of years working as fashion buyers, we decided to launch Rixo as we felt there was a gap in the market for vintage-inspired pieces at a contemporary price point. It was a big risk. We quit our jobs, invested all of our own money and spent our first year doing absolutely everything ourselves, but we haven’t looked back since.
Describe your brand in three words. Orlagh: Vintage-inspired. Flattering. Prints!
What kind of woman wears your label?
Henrietta: Rixo is for all women, regardless of age, shape, nationality or season. The Rixo girl doesn’t follow fashion trends – she cares about investing in original pieces that will stand the test of time. She wants easy-to-wear, flattering wardrobe essentials that fit seamlessly into her lifestyle and aren’t something she wears once and never touches again. We want women to know that they can count on their Rixo piece time and time again.
How do you see your pieces being worn?
Henrietta: Our dresses are made to be versatile wardrobe pieces – our Marni wrapdress or Luna wrapdress work just as well paired with heels for an event as they do dressed-down over a pair of jeans or with trainers for a casual lunch, or even over a bikini and paired with sandals for a day by the pool or at the beach.
Orlagh: For our separates, such as our Georgia skirt and Moss blouse, you can go bold and wear them together either in the same print, or, in our favourite way, pair opposing prints together. Alternatively, pair one of our Georgia skirts with a vintage shirt or a basic, crisp white T-shirt and the Moss blouse with denim for easy breezy, low-maintenance looks.
Why do you think it’s better working as a duo rather than solo?
Henrietta: Rixo is our baby – building the brand has basically been our life for the past three years and it’s been great to have Orlagh to share the experience with. It’s amazing to have someone who is as invested in Rixo
as much as I am and who is as determined as I am to see it be a success.
Orlagh: The best thing for me is knowing someone will always have my back, whether it’s to bounce ideas off, push me to run with a creative idea – such as a new print combination that I perhaps thought might have been completely crazy – or, at the same time, have the confidence to flag if they think something won’t work. Two heads are always better than one.
