Winds likely to die down tonight, national weather bureau says

Conditions will be rough at sea with 10ft waves, forecaster warns

- By Aftab Kazmi Bureau Chief

Al Ain Strong north-westerly winds that are blowing mainly along the western coastline are likely to subside gradually tonight, according to the national weather bureau.

The winds have helped to lower the temperature that had gone up to 30C a few days ago in some areas, giving a summer-like feel amid the season’s coldest month of the year.

The thrust of the winds was in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi emirate that reached as far as Al Ain yesterday. In some coastal areas the wind speed was more than 65km/ h, kicking up dust and sand.

Dangerous

There was also some rain in Ras Al Khaimah and its surrounding areas on Friday night. Conditions were also partly cloudy in Abu Dhabi and some other coastal and northern areas yesterday.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said it will be fair to partly cloudy at times over some areas today. The centre also forecast a very rough sea today with waves as high as eight to ten feet.

Conditions will be dangerous for small boats offshore, said a forecaster, asking people to follow weather information before venturing out. Relative humidity will also increase by nighttime in some internal areas; however, no chance of fog is reported. Temperatures are likely to be in the range of 14C to 25C in coastal areas, 12C to 31C in internal areas and 8C to 21C in mountainous areas.
