Aman charged with stealing electric cables from an international car company told a court he just happened to be on the scene at the time.

He told the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance yesterday that his presence prompted witnesses to accuse him of the crime. One of the three witnesses told the court he had no knowledge of what took place and that he had filed a complaint with the police based on what others told him.

The suspect was found to be at the location after working hours.

“The on- site operation was scheduled to be shut down and the stolen cables had already been cut into pieces ready for packing to be returned to our warehouse,” the second Emirati witness, S. K. told the court.

Locked

“The location was locked from the outside and a guard hired by the car company was on duty at the time. I have been told by the third witness, who is currently absent, that he had seen the defendant’s vehicle drive into the site. We have tracking devices on all our company pick- up trucks,” S. K. added.

The witness, who works with the defendant in the same company, said employees were not allowed to be at the location where the incident took place unless they were designated by the engineer in charge, had informed the control room and had two other persons accompanying them for safety purposes.

“I just happened to be driving by that night when I thought I saw someone inside. I headed home to get my keys and when I came back the gate was open. I did not steal those cables,” the defendant said.

The case has been adjourned until December 10 to hear the third witness.
