Two suspects inKuwaiti student’s death denied bail

Two suspects charged with torturing aKuwaiti student to death in 2013 were denied bail by a judge in the Sharjah Sharia Court yesterday. A third suspect is at large. The men will appear before the court on September 29 when witnesses in the case will give their testimonie­s.

The two suspects in the case, Shaikh Y. H. S., a member of the Kuwaiti royal family, and H. A., 18, are being held at Sharjah’s Central Prison.

The third suspect, who is being hunted by Interpol, faces charges in absentia of covering up the crime and failing to report it to authoritie­s.

It is understood thatMubara­k was accused of harassing the sister of one of the three suspects and borrowed Dh100,000 from one of them.

The case of the dead Kuwaiti student opened at Sharjah Sharia Court on January 22 but was conducted in a closed session.

Lawyers for the accused appealed to the court to summon witnesses in the case, including the man who filmed the video and staff in the emergency department of University City Hospital in Sharjah, in addition to university cafeteria staff where the victim collapsed.

Rashid Al Omrani, AttorneyGe­neral of Sharjah Prosecutio­n, told Gulf News earlier that “according to our investigat­ions, we are submitting three charges against the suspects to the criminal court: Deprivatio­n of the victim’s freedom, torture and premeditat­ed murder”.

The victim’s family want are seeking the death sentence for the suspects and vowed to never pardon the killers.
