At least 18 people were killed and 164 others sustained serious injuries due to speeding and reckless driving over the first 10 months of this year in Sharjah, according to Sharjah Police statistics.

Police said neglect and lack of attention caused 65 accidents that left five dead while lack of sufficient distance between vehicles caused 58 accidents that left five dead.

Colonel Sultan Abdullah Al Khayal, director of media and public relations department at Sharjah Police, said police are taking strict measures to reduce accidents and ensure the safety of road users.

“Speeding kills a number of people every year and we are determined to win the battle to save lives. Road accidents are fatal not only to individuals and their families but also to the society and the economy,” he said.

Col Al Khayal said that all traffic accidents were linked to the behaviour of drivers.

More youngsters who take to the wheel are responsible for crashes, he said.

He called on the motorists to strictly follow traffic rules and stop speeding.

“Terrible and fatal accidents are what you get or cause when you do not follow the traffic rules and guidance. Human and material losses are the price we pay for careless and reckless driving,” Col Al Khayal said.

Sharjah Police will continue their extensive efforts to spread awareness about the dangers of reckless driving and speeding, he said.

Motorists ignore rules

Despite the awareness campaigns launched by Sharjah Police, motorists still ignore traffic and safety rules.

Sharjah Police are keen to apply the strategy and initiatives of the Ministry of Interior to improve road safety, reduce congestion, accidents, and the number of deaths.

Col Al Khayal said, “Intensive inspections were conducted in the emirate, and violating vehicles were impounded.”

He also reminded motorists to abide by all traffic regulations in order to avoid endangering their lives and those of others, stressing that Sharjah Police will not hesitate to take all measures to maintain the safety of road users.
