Sivakarthikeyan is a cop in ‘Kakki’

It’s the first time doing action for this comedy star

- Ethir Neechal Kaaki Sattai

The gift of the gab and an ability to make others laugh proved to be a stepping stone for Tamil actor Sivakarthikeyan, whose transition from television host to film hero is commendable.

After breaking into films with Pandiraj’s Marina in 2012, Sivakarthikeyan is now ready with his seventh film, Kaaki Sattai , out today in the UAE. It’s his first time playing a cop. “Mathimaaran is a young policeman who joins the services with dreams to achieve many things in his career,” said Sivakarthikeyan.

What makes this police story different from regular stereotypes is the positive attitude of Mathimaaran, he added.

Having played a boy-next-door and a young lover in his earlier films, this is the first time Sivakarthikeyan explored action sequences.

Gaining weight for the role — up to 7kg — was the first challenge, revealed the actor, as his body constitution is not inclined to gaining weight easily. Once he added the extra baggage and donned the khaki uniform, it bolstered his confidence to play the part.

An engineering graduate with an MBA, Sivakarthikeyan was popular in college for his mimicry shows and dreamt of a career in the entertainment industry.

Playing Mathimaaran evoked memories of his late father, G. Doss, a police officer who died when Sivakarthikeyan was 16.

“Appa [dad] joined as an ordinary policeman and climbed the rungs to become an officer who was known for his strict discipline,” remembered Sivakarthikeyan.

“But once home, we saw his jolly self only.”

Kaaki Sattai is directed by Durai Senthil, former assistant to director Vetrimaran, in his second venture. Telegu actress Sri Divya is the female lead. With Sivakarthikeyan, can comedy be far behind?

Sivakarthikeyan worked with Senthil on , a box-office success, and the duo share a great rapport. The actor acknowledged having learnt many practical lessons from his director. “Durai is a calm and composed person who remained unfazed no matter what hurdles cropped up during shooting. We shot in the midst of heavy traffic in Chennai and there were permission issues, yet he never panicked.”

In this story of good versus bad are Vijay Raaz (of Delhi Belly fame), Telegu actor Nagineedu and Tamil actor Yogi Japee, playing the villains.

Produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Productions, has music scored by Anirudh Ravichander.
