Hundreds of employers in the UAE have applied for registration under a new programme to protect Indian workers, the Indian Embassy said yesterday.

The recently launched eMigrate system for foreign employers (FE) looking to hire Indian workers has been well received, but only 18 out of the 250 registered applicants were verified, officials said.

The e-service launched last month by the Indian government aims to crack down on fraudulent job offers.

Currently, the e-Migrate system only covers employers looking to recruit Indian blue collar workers and nurses.

Neeta Bhushan, deputy chief of mission and head of chancery at the Indian Embassy, said: “Violators will be placed on the ‘Prior Approval Category’ list and will not be able to employ Indian workers without authorisation.”

Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy is launching a monthly raffle for an air ticket in an effort to encourage more NonResident Foreign employers recruiting over 150 Indian workers must register online immediately Those recruiting 50-150 must register before June 30 Those recruiting 20-50 must register before July 31 Those recruiting less than 20 must register before August 31

Indians (NRIs) register with the embassy.

“Around 40,000 of the 2.6 million Indians living in the UAE have registered. A draw to allow one registered NRI to win a ticket to India will begin this month or the next,” she said.

Repatriating bodies and compiling key emergency contacts will also become easier once NRIs are registered.

The embassy is currently visiting labour accommodations to raise awareness on health and insurance issue. Computer training is also being considered.
