Dubai Municipality distributes Braille flyers of national anthem
MOVE AIMS TO INCLUDE VISUALLY IMPAIRED PEOPLE IN CELEBRATIONS
Citizens in all walks of life are participating in this year’s 44th National Day today, and those with visual impairment have not been excluded.
Dubai Municipality on Monday launched its social inclusion programme by distributing flyers of the UAE national anthem in Braille. The flyers were not only handed to municipality employees who are visually impaired, but were also delivered to a number of government departments who have blind employees.
“The Braille leaflets are one of the ways in which we can include visually impaired people in our national celebrations. We have a few employees with special needs, but that does not mean that they should be left out,” said Esmail Al Banna, director of marketing at the municipality.
The national anthem was published in Arabic Braille and is read from left to right, following the international convention, and also the numbers are from left to right.
“This is the first time that we have launched such an initiative for the blind, and we are more than happy to take on the burden of the costs of publishing such flyers for interested organisations,” he said.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 90 per cent of the world’s visually impaired live in developing countries.
