The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won the most seats in the first local government elections in Islamabad, with the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) coming in a close second.
According to unofficial results made available yesterday, the PML-N won 21 seats in the elections for union councils in the capital’s urban and rural areas held on Monday.
The PTI led by Imran Khan secured 16 seats, most of these from the urban areas, while independent candidates bagged 13 seats.
PPP, JUI fall
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Jamaate-Islami (JUI) contested the polls but failed to make a mark.
At least nine candidates, belonging to the minorities, got elected unopposed in different union councils on the reserved seats.
