Stop the managerial merry-goround!

-

European football has become something of a managerial merry-goround these past few years and the Spanish top flight, as just proven, most certainly hasn’t been immune to the constant turning of that particular carousel. The need for immediate gratification has often taken precedence over common sense.

But it needs to stop. Now. How else are clubs supposed to be able to gain any sort of continuity? Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither are football clubs. The foundations take time to lay as do the building blocks.

The best clubs to work for and with are those who allow their managers the time to implement their business practice. Not dispensing with a quality managerial addition at the drop of a hat because literally a handful of results haven’t been acceptable.

Why has Rafael Benitez been sacked and replaced by Zinedine Zidane?

One of the finest players to ever grace the beautiful game without doubt, but someone with zero managerial ability at the top level and certainly nowhere close to Benitez on a tactical level.

The man in the opposition dugout in Benitez’s last match in charge, Gary Neville has until the end of the season at Valencia. But given his recent statements, and despite his attempted clarifications, one wonders whether that will extend beyond the summer months.

Giving the ex-Man United man his big break in management was laudable and brave of Valencia — and in some respects they should be applauded because risk can often bring reward.

Supporters continue to pay their hard-earned to be entertained — but not at all costs. Fans want identity. Fans need identity. Not to have the heart continuously ripped out of their club on the whim of a billionaire. Time for some stability and for the carousel to stop turning. Because eventually the wheels are going to come off otherwise.
