UAE, Japan eye space exploration
Officials from both countries discuss ways of cooperation during Japan’s Space Week
Building strong ties in the field of space exploration are the key themes behind Japan’s Space Week, being held in the UAE over three days.
The events began on Sunday in the capital, and saw several high-ranking Japanese officials from the government and space sector meet their Emirati counterparts, discussing ways in which both countries could enhance their cooperation when it comes to space science.
“Close cooperation with the UAE in the area of space exploration is extremely important for Japan, and is something we are keenly looking to establish between our countries,” said Yosuke Takagi, Japanese State Minister for economy, trade and industry.
“Japan has been involved in planetary expeditions for many years now, achieving several successful results such as the collection of samples from an asteroid,” he added.
The minister added that Japan’s success could provide a good opportunity for the UAE in terms of information and knowledge sharing.
“As a result of our achievements, we will be able to extend our cooperation with the UAE, helping the country achieve its goals and aspirations in space,” he said.
Dr Mohammad Al Ahlabi, director-general of the UAE Space Agency, spoke positively on the potential for Japan-UAE relations in space.
“Japan Space Week is a great initiative that will bring both sides together to sit and discuss possible future cooperation, and we at the UAE Space Agency are very pleased to be taking part in this event, the first of its kind to be held in the UAE by Japan,” he said.
Dr Al Ahlabi said that the UAE has put a strong focus on the space industry, as seen by its Mars 2021 mission announced in 2014.
“The UAE government and its people understand that space is important, especially for our future. The UAE has decided to heavily invest in space exploration as this will inspire our young people and act as a platform for innovation,” he said.
