Police officials investigating the triple murder of Jessica Fonseca and her twin teenage sons, Joshua and Tarren, who were found with their throats slit in their apartment in South Kolkata early on Saturday — are still clueless about what the motive for the crime.

Neil Fonseca, a 47-year-old interior decorator and the lone survivor who is now undergoing treatment at a state-run hospital for injuries to his throat and wrists, is the prime suspect in the case.

“We are waiting for him to recover so that he can tell us what led to the crime,” said an officer of the homicide squad.

Criminal hand suspected

Though Neil had claimed that he murdered his wife after she killed their two sons, the investigators are unwilling to believe it, as they suspect a professional killer was involved. “The injury marks on the three suggest a professional killer being involved. No ordinary person can use a weapon in that manner. Also he [Neil] had claimed that he hit his wife with a dumbbell but she was found with her throat slit. He is certainly not telling us the truth,” said an investigating officer.

“There are lots of lies in all that he is saying. Unless he is fit enough to talk we will not be able to interrogate him thoroughly,” the officer added.

Neil has also claimed that Jessica suspected him of having affairs and the couple always fought whenever any women called him. He said he got into a fight with Jessica late that night, following which she grabbed a knife and slit the throats of their two sons, who were asleep at that time. He said he got hurt trying to save the boys.

Also, the statements the other two members of of the house, their 21-year-old daughter Samantha who was sleeping in the adjacent room along with Jessica’s sister Shabana, has confused the police.

Perplexing testimony

During interrogation, both claimed that they had not heard anything that night and did not know about the problems of the family, if any. “It is quite unbelievable that two people sleeping next door could not hear anything while three got murdered in the adjacent room. Also she (Jessica) is an adult and will certainly have an understanding as to the overall condition of the family. She just refuses to answer any of these questions,” said another investigating officer.
