What does it mean?

The Kohinoor diamond has a long history of changing hands since the 13th century, which was highlighted in the page A22 report, ‘This diamond is forever... so is the bickering’, published in the World section of Gulf News on April 20.

The Indian government decided this week not to stake its claim on the diamond since it was given to the British as “voluntary compensation” during the Anglo-Sikh Wars. However, several members of the Indian parliament believe that the Kohinoor was illegally taken. Six out of 10 poll respondents believe India should get the Kohinoor back.

The issue rehashes strong sentiments about relics stolen by the British Empire over hundreds of years. UK Prime Minister David Cameron said in his visit to India in 2000 that if the British government were to begin returning goods collected during colonialism, the British Museum would be empty.
