Dh250,000 fine for bid to defame woman

Accused convicted of blackmaili­ng woman, telling her he would upload private photos

An Arab man has been ordered to pay a fine of Dh250,000 for threatenin­g to defame a woman by uploading her private photos on Facebook.

The Sharjah Sharia Court found the Arab man guilty of threatenin­g to defame the woman, a lawyer said yesterday.

The man has been fined Dh250,000, the court ruled.

Eman Sabt, the 29-yearold woman’s lawyer, said her client from a Gulf country filed a complaint with police after she received abusive SMSs from the man who insulted her and threatened to post her photos on Facebook.

The ruling was delivered on September 22, the lawyer said.

The 30-year-old man became acquainted with the woman through the social media network.

After their relationsh­ip A woman employee and a technician have been accused of defaming a businesswo­man, who owns a beauty spa, on Facebook and calling her a bad hairstylis­t and psycho.

The Polish businesswo­man, who owns and runs a beauty spa in Dubai, was said to have had a labour dispute with her countrywom­an [who was employed at the spa] whom she fired following a dispute in 2015. The sacked employee [identified as M.] opened a Facebook account with a bogus name, according to records, and used it to disrepute the businesswo­man.

A 33-year-old Polish woman and her 44-yearold countryman technician visited the spa’s Facebook page and posted slanderous comments. Prosecutor­s accused the duo of cursing the businesswo­man on a social media platform. The suspects pleaded not guilty. The man then blackmaile­d her, threatenin­g to post her photos on Facebook if she did not respond to his wishes.

Prosecutor­s charged the man with threatenin­g and defaming the woman.
