UAE-filmed ‘War Machine’: a first look

- War Machine,

First images and a teaser trailer for a Brad Pitt film that shot in Abu Dhabi, have been released by Netflix.

The film stars Pitt as cocksure General McMahon — a fictitious based on the real life General Stanley McChrystal — who is bent on winning the war in Afghanistan. It has been described as an “absurdist war story for our times”. Written and directed by David Michod (Animal Kingdom), it explores the general’s rise and fall, using both parody and reality to tell his story. The tone of the 45 second teaser seems more lighthearted than most war films. “Finish your phone call,” Pitt’s character says. “The war can wait.”

The Netflix original features Tilda Swinton, Ben Kingsley, Topher Grace, Anthony Michael Hall, Will Poulter, Lakeith Stanfield, Meg Tilly and Emory Cohen. It was inspired by the 2012 non-fiction book The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan, written by late journalist Michael Hastings.

The film will release globally on Netflix on May 26, 2017. —Staff Report
