Living with diabetes

-

s someone who is struggling to manage my diabetes, I believe an active lifestyle plays a major role in bringing it under control. But genetic and hereditary factors could determine in advance whether one is prone to developing diabetes. Many people choose to remain nonchalant about how their blood sugar level can take a toll on their health and quality of life. They often ignore regular check-ups, either from the fear of confirming that they have diabetes, which would lead them to deprive themselves of the food they enjoy, or the belief that, unless there are symptoms, one should not be too bothered. Both approaches could cause serious damage to one’s health. Since uncontrolled diabetes affects most functions of our internal organs, early detection is of paramount importance.

There also exist contradictory reports on how patients must be treated. However, most people agree that a combination of diet, regular exercise and medication is the most effective solution. The argument that allopathic medication invariably comes with its share of side effects and potential complications that may develop over a period of time, however, is a major concern for many patients, particularly for those who suffer from Type 2 diabetes.

Each patient’s response to certain diets also varies, as some foods that contain carbohydrates, such as potatoes and white rice, are found to be detrimental to health by causing an increase in blood sugar. An increase in general awareness regarding the hidden perils of such food, especially in developed countries, has brought about much change in people’s attitude to this condition. Precautionary measures are being taken seriously by everybody.

Let us hope there is a scientific breakthrough in medicine for a complete and effective cure to diabetes.
