Cartoons have dangerous influence

- By Megna Rajagopal

After that child who jumped off his building with an umbrella after watching a cartoon, we need to seriously consider how these shows influence children (‘Boy, 7, survives high-rise jump with umbrella’, Gulf News, April 22). Children watch a lot of cartoons like Tom and Jerry, Sponge Bob, Mickey Mouse and others on television. Many parents agreed today that every child is interested in cartoons. It is very good if a child watches only educational cartoons, but there are a lot of cartoons that have bad influences on children.

Nowadays children have become addicted to watching cartoons and, as a result, there are a lot of debates about whether children are affected by cartoons more positively or negatively. Unfortunately, these people claim that today’s cartoons have more violent acts than cartoons during their childhood. Although cartoons can be educational and entertaining, many people believe that modern cartoons are violent, create a false sense of reality and negatively affect the development of children’s social skills.

Most people think that cartoons are colourful and harmless movies for children.

However, it is not true. Most cartoons contain violence, which can affect a child’s mind. In cartoons, people jump from high buildings and they do not suffer any injuries. After watching such cartoons, children have an incorrect sense of real life. It can lead to some injuries or dangerous situations.

Indeed it is interesting for children to watch cartoons and it is a good source of entertainment. But adults have to understand that it can influence a child and can push them to do terrible things. It can be dangerous for children, because they try to do unrealistic things after watching cartoons.

On the other hand, there are many cartoons that teach children new things that can be useful in the future. So, parents should choose a good environment for their children that will protect them. The next generation is the future and adults today have to care about it.
