Ganguly in BCCI body to oversee reforms

It will be hard work, says senior vicepresident Mathew

ASpecial General Meeting of the Indian cricket board has formed a seven-member committee to ensure that the Supreme Court’s directive to adhere to Justice R.M. Lodha Committee’s recommendations are implemented at the earliest.

The members of the committee include former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, while it will be chaired by Rajeev Shukla, who is also the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The other members of the committee are T.C. Mathew, Naba Bhattacharjee, Jay Shah with Anirudh Chaudhry, Treasurer, BCCI and Amitabh Choudhary, Acting Secretary as Convener.

Speaking to Gulf News, Mathew, a senior vice-president from Kerala who chaired the meeting said: “We hope to come up with a positive result. It will be hard work but we have experienced members in the committee who are capable.”

The seven-member committee will identify the few critical points in respect of the judgement for the General Body of the BCCI to consider before its submission to the Hon’ble Supreme Court.

“It will be hard work. 19 of the affiliates had already filed applications before the Supreme Court. There are many hurdles with many associations expressing their views and hence we will have to look into various aspects,” added Mathew.

The next date of hearing of the Supreme Court has been fixed as July 14, 2017 so the committee is requested to fix an early date for its meeting in order to ensure that the above task is undertaken with utmost urgency and it’s written report circulated by July 10, 2017 so that the same may be considered by the General Body and finalised before the above hearing.

The BCCI Acting President C.K. Khanna will be apprised on a regular basis on the deliberations of the committee and the report shall finally be submitted to him to present it to the General Body.

It would be a huge challenge for this committee and how they would tackle recommendations like one state, one member, one vote rule; cooling off period of three years after every term; age cap of 70 for officer bearers; nine-year tenure restriction rule and restoring the selection committee to five members.

It should be noted that this committee has been formed nearly a year and-a-half after Supreme Court ordered that it is compulsory that BCCI implements the Lodha Committee recommendations. The four-member Commmitee of Administrators (CoA) appointed by Supreme Court have already failed in implementing any of the recommendations with Ramachandra Guha.
