Parwatkar guides Mammoths home

All-rounder bags 4 wickets and hits rapid 43 to sink Mideast Metals

Ambey Parwatkar, who formerly turned out for the Goa state side in India’s domestic Ranji Trophy tournament, has the reputation of producing his best in finals.

In the final of the second edition of the Dubai Cricket Council’s Weekend Slammers tournament played at the Dubai Cricket Stadium, Parwatkar’s all-round show ensured Dubai Mammoths, who had finished second best in the final last year, finished with the trophy this time round, defeating Mideast Metals by five wickets.

Parwatkar bagged four wickets for 29 and also scored 43 runs to single-handedly help Dubai Mammoths lift the Weekend

Slammers Cup. His spell resulted in Mideast being restricted to 160 for 9 in 25 overs. His knock of 43 from 35 balls, with two sixes and four fours, alongside Shadab Khan’s unbeaten 48, helped Mammoths reach the target in 20.4 overs.

Speaking after winning the Man of the Final award, Parwatkar said: “During my 23 years of domestic cricket, I have produced many such all-round performanc­es, at least six times for Yogi Club that I played for in the past. In 2008, I won five consecutiv­e Parwatkar.

Individual awards:

Best batsman: Syed Haider of Mideast Metals (5 matches, 224 runs). Best bowler: Devendra Taneja of Dubai Mammoths (5 matches, 13 wickets). Mideast started badly, losing their star batsman Khurram Khawaja after he had faced just two balls. Yasir Siraj (10) and Mohammad Arif (5) were also dismissed in quick succession. Syed Haider, who won the best batsman of the tournament award, and Ali Anwar then put on 89 runs as they tried to take their team to safety. Haider hit 44 runs and Anwar cracked 55. But once they departed, the rest of the batsmen found the going tough against Parwatkar and Devendra Taneja, who took two wickets.

In reply, Mammoths lost opener Fardan Khalid for 2 but Parwatkar and C. Prajakat (26) steadied the innings.

After Prajakat and Parwatkar departed, Mideast had a whiff of victory but Shadab Khan quashed their hopes with a powerful unbeaten 48 from 35 balls with three fours.
