Counterfeit goods worth Dh30m seized in Ajman
11 suspects arrested in a raid on villa following a tipoff from luxury brand company
Ajman Police have seized counterfeit goods of various top brands worth Dh30 million in a raid on a villa in the emirate, said a senior official.
Lieutenant-Colonel Gaith Al Kaabi, director of Al Nuaimia police station, said that the police took action after receiving a tipoff that some traders were selling fake items with labels of popular brands.
Police identified the villa where fake items were stored. At least 11 Chinese suspects, including four women, were arrested. Lt-Col Al Gaith said that police received information from representatives of a leading brand of luxury items.
The raid was conducted in coordination with enforcers of Intellectual Property Rights. Counterfeit items including shoes, wallets, sunglasses, accessories and bags were recovered from the villa. These items were being sold at the Ajman Dragonmart and other shops.
Major-General Shaikh Sultan Bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Chief of Ajman Police, said the battle against pirated products is not yet over as more effort has to be made to help make the public aware about the negative impact of using counterfeit products and how to distinguish a genuine product and a fake one.
Ajman Police, he added, are taking every possible step to combat the menace. Police have so far seized counterfeit products worth more than Dh85 million and arrested a total of 54 suspects in 2017.
