A throwback to ten years
I started writing this article with thoughts of regret and disappointment. Regret for the lost years and maybe, opportunities. And disappointment for missing a lunch or dinner party that would include a certificate of loyalty or in our Filipino tradition, a simple papansit (a noodle menu served during special occasions in the Philippines).
But then I told myself, if I dwell on them, only I will again lose my focus and invite negativity.
So, instead here’s to the wonderful 10 years! Yes, I am celebrating my ten years of working in the same company by writing this article. A throwback to ten years. I started working in our company as a pioneer staff. Employee number 001. Just me and my two bosses. And it was fun! I served as the receptionist slash office girl, serving tea and coffee, doing the dishes and cleaning the office. And I am proud of it!
Slowly I established a wonderful relationship with my bosses, they became like my family. I have seen my bosses get married, their kids growing and just as they have seen me getting married, losing my first pregnancy and then having my now almost eight-year-old daughter. She even visits my office once in a while. Fast forward to present. As the company progressed, we survived ups and downs that rocked the business and relationships in the office. Some situations pushed me to write my resignation letter only to be crumpled, torn up and thrown
Ten years! Looking back, would I have known I will be in my position for this long, maybe I would have done things differently, career wise. I graduated from a prestigious school in the Philippines and I only expected to be the best! But one’s luck in a foreign country doesn’t depend on one’s diploma, regardless. And sometimes, one’s principle towards earning and loyalty also matters.
I may not have reached my optimum gauge in terms of my profession, but I know I have been blessed with opportunities and a stable job that continues to give me a salary on time, to feed us. I am grateful.
