Do teachers need more training in behavioural management to avoid classroom chaos? Gulf News readers debate.

A welcome move

welcome the recent news in Gulf News that teachers in the UAE will be tested on their knowledge and skills. I think this additional assessment is needed and will create a sense of uniformity in the hiring process. Often the wrong people get hired. When this happens the only people who suffer are the pupils. Parents pay a lot of money to ensure that their children get proper education and are in the right hands. If the teacher is not qualified and do not have the skills to educate others, it is not fair on parents. This additional assessment will help tie loose ends and make sure that teachers are fit for their role. The UAE always comes up with very useful laws.

Only hire the most qualified

Yes, teachers should be assessed. Only those who passed their International English Language Testing System (IELTS), board exams and have obtained work experience from a reputed school should be recruited. A proper dress code should also be in place for both men and women. They should have updated knowledge in their selective field. Students must evaluate teachers too.

Regular seminars are helpful

Yes, teachers should be evaluated based on the subjects they teach. He or she is the backbone of every developing society. They have to be in charge of the subjects they are teaching. They should also attend seminars for better understanding of their subjects. The method of teaching should be assessed, and seminars for such methods should be carried out regularly.

UAE

High fees, unworthy teachers

Not only should they be assessed on the subjects they teach but also on the tools and techniques they use to impart knowledge to the students. The amount of fees we pay to provide decent education is quite high in UAE, but many schools charge these high fees and are totally not worth it. They try to hire poorly teachers, especially as assistants or language teachers.

From Ms Maddie Khan UAE

No assessment needed

Teachers do not need to be frequently assessed on the subject they teach, however that does not mean that they are exempted from all forms of assessment. It is crucial that teachers are occasionally assessed for their teaching techniques. Being an expert in a scientific field does not make a person a suitable teacher. Teachers should be assessed for their skills in delivering the information to the students and for their abilities to manage students who suffer from a difficulty of learning. Teachers are humans not robots, they should not be assessed for how much they remember but for the quality of their delivery.
